THREE DISCOVERIES THAT CAN BE DISAPPOINTING TO A CHILD.

1a. Finding out that there is (allegedly) not an actual man who lives permanently on the moon.

1b. Finding out that really good movies with great characters are frequently followed by mediocre and forgettable sequels.
3. Finding out that despite their
homophonic similarity, there is a discernible difference between eating a waffle and eating a falafel.

2. Learning that umbrellas are not near as effective in combating gravity as Mary Poppins would have you believe.
3a. Discovering that a person's success in a particular field - like sports - is often a terrible indicator of how decent a human being they are.

3b. Finding out that Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory is made up. And cavities aren't.

3b,II. Finding out that ostriches can't fly, and that supposedly there's no such thing as dragons.

3c. Finding out that it's a lot harder to find stylish footsie pajamas the older, taller, and bigger you get.

Also, discovering that recess is no longer a basic human right, like clean water or free wi-fi.

Anyway, those are just the first three things that popped into my head. I've dealt with a lot of disappointment. I'll think of more.

Happy Wodensday.

WE DO NOT HATE SCIENCE IN THIS FAMILY, AND YOU WILL LEARN TO LOVE STAR TREK SOMEDAY, OKAY?

"You know what I'm really excited to watch with you someday?"

I asked my son, and I patiently did not wait for an answer.

"Star Trek."
I said.

- "Well,"
he stated matter of factly,
"I don't want to see Star Trek."

"Why?"

- "Because,"
he spoke slowly.
"It has science in it, and I don't really like science."

"What?!"
I exploded.
"That does it: we are going to start watching it...really soon. And you WILL like it. And we DO like science. Get it? Got it?! Good."

He shrugged and went back to drawing a picture of Cyclops eating Odysseus; his alternate depiction of the timeless tale. A tale which also features a bit of science. Mostly physics. Oy vey.
