WHAT CHILD IS ____?

I peered closer at my phone screen, and the new freshly-installed page of apps:

Hebrew Bible
Bilingual Bible (Hebrew, 2nd version)
Bible - Hebrew (3rd version)
Mango language - Hebrew
Hebrew Dictionary
Hebrew Bible (4th version)
Hebrew KJV Bible (5th version)
Holy Bible (just...English?)
Nemo - Hebrew
Nemo - Greek
Nemo - Arabic
Lonely Planet - Asia
Messianic Jewish Music
Shabbat Alert

Does not include the reams of Google Docs filled with carefully-typed Hebrew and Greek translations and interpretations of the Book of Daniel.

I cannot be completely certain which child is behind the appearance of these on my phone, but I have a notion which child I will commence conversations with concerning the matter. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!

____

And you must simply take a listen to Loretta Lynn’s cheery, unapologetically twangy, and beautiful White Christmas Blue album from last year. Fantastic.

CAESAR NON SUPRA GRAMMATICOS.

when your dad is making you learn Latin roots,
sometimes you need a comforting ear,
that you can grumble and cry to,
and wish he was less awful.

what a wonderful world that would be.

ANOTHER PICTURE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM SOME OF THE OTHER PICTURES WHICH AREN'T QUITE THE SAME AS THIS ONE IS.

I look at this image, and
although they're not playing chess here,
I keep thinking of Bergman's 1957 classic The Seventh Seal.
A thoughtful, intriguing, and often dull film about death and faith and hope.

So then I look at this image again, and
think of Monty Python,
and the many ludicrous enlightenments and dotty humor of 1975's The Holy Grail.

And then I look at this image again, and
remember that the reality is that they are
designing and drawing food pyramids,
using pen & watercolour,
and discussing
whether a blueberry is a better fruit than a strawberry,
and whether people actually eat chicken eggs with baby chickens inside,
and whether Leonardo da Vinci is the best cook of the Ninja Turtles,
and agreeing that Andrew Jackson treated Native Americans terribly,
and vigorously hurling Shakespearean insults with shotgun-sniper precision
and wondering if it's worse to be evil or to be wicked,
and why do some people stick tomatoes in the vegetable part of the pyramid,
because it is, of course, a fruit.

(yes, no tomatoes in fruit salad)

And I realise that oftentimes Reality really is the great
apex of Imagination;
that sometimes what I imagine is less interesting than
what's actually happening.

Still, Monty Python.

King Arthur: I am your king.
Peasant Woman: Well, I didn't vote for you.
King Arthur: You don't vote for kings.
Peasant Woman: Well, how'd you become king, then?

THE MOST UNMETERED AND BRAZENLY POOR RHYMING IN THE HISTORY OF EVER AND FOREVER.

Of course they should learn mathematics and placeholders and zeroes,
but also the heroine's journey, three-act structure, and a bit about superheroes.

Of course they need to learn about Lincoln, Anthony and Margaret Meade,
but also to write like Silverstein, rhyme like Seuss, and plant like Appleseed.

Of course they oughta nail those ABCs,
but more important, get lotsa dirt on their knees.

Of course they'll learn about Newton, Curie, Galileo,
but also how to get along, be kind, and politely say No.

Of course they'll learn about cells and photosynthesis and motion,
but also to throw a ball, take a fall, and study the ocean.

Of course they'll learn the theory of 12-note scales and harmonics and a sense of rhythm more than their dad,
but also the genius of Bird, to be light on the feet, and how to sing louder than dad.

Of course they'll learn to take tests and sit straight and know the Great Lakes,
but also to mix smoothies and slurp shakes and perfect the making of corn pancakes.

Of course they'll figure out how the Romans ripped off the Greeks, and note the idiocy of so many wars, and memorize the Ages of Silicon, Iron, Bronze, and Stones,
but also absorb the importance of building on what has come before and making it better, constantly asking questions, and embracing why Beatles trump Stones.

Of course they'll learn the skeletal system and healthy diet and looking after themself,
but also to run fast, hike hard, and intelligently discuss Elf.

Of course they really should get those sentence diagrams down,
and the names of all the African countries, and the phylums of every South American lifeform, and remember that two plus two usually equals four...
...but also to maybe question whether there is a conceivable universe or exception where two + two equals...more than four. Four plus more.

Maybe every day, every single day,
should have lots and lots...
...of play.

Play hard, universe.
If you're really big,
or really little,
or in between,

And listen to some good tunes while you're at it.

À bientôt.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: JXIL & MDL.

A dynamic range of emotions on the first day of school.

The task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts.
- C.S. Lewis

And probably, most irrigation doesn't happen behind a desk.
But, when in Rome.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: JOEY.

I teach two classes at a Portland high school. Every year, my wife snaps a pic of me heading off for my first day.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGONFLY TATTOO.

EINSTEIN WAS TERRIBLE AT MATH, RIGHT?
I'm probably being too hard on myself, but it makes me feel kind of not very smart when I have a challenging time assembling toys that are marked "toddler-friendly."
