JESUS WALKS TO THE CRAZY TRAIN, ALL ABOARD / J.M. LONG PROMO VID.
Did I drive my children to a summer Bible program and introduce them to Kanye West on the way there?
Afterward, when the attire of a teenage volunteer came up at this event and the kids were asking who Black Sabbath was, did I then segue to a sonic blast of
Ozzy's Crazy Train,
Sabbath's Paranoid,
Zeppelin's Immigrant Song,
and then Trent Reznor / Atticus Ross / Karen O's rendition of Immigrant Song?
Umm, maybe.
Our youngest thinks I look pretty awesome on the air guitar. I've been waiting decades to have someone look at me like that.
I think Jesus would have a good time laughing with me, and sometimes at me. And I think he'd like me. I like him.
___
My bro Jeremy "J.M.Long" Long has a new single out today.
I did an unasked for, totally unlegal promo for it.

POEM : THE WIPERS ARE BROKEN.
Free yourself from intimidation,
The wise said with elucidation
‘Imagine that important person naked,
who has eaten a pastry that was baked.’
It is a leveler, a democratizer, an image of equality
That works magnificently, yet it seems to me,
to go one step more
And bring us to a similar level of floor,
We might also remember
That all, born in January through December,
Once wore diapers
And needed assistance from wipers
Or else they went naked and bare butted
Their dignity intact and ungutted.
But as the philosophy book reads
That begs and asks and pleads
To remember that everyone poops
Digesting what was ingested, from breads to broccolis to soups
For every leader on high
Still lowers their fanny with sigh
And a grunt and a cough and a push and a toot
Whether delicate angel or big hairy brute.
They do what they must,
With no grumble or fusst.
A normal part of being
Like walking or breathing or seeing.
So if someone seems important and mean
Imagine them eating a bowlful of bean
And sitting later on their important throne
With a gasp, a sigh, and a moan
That is horrible to imagine, but sometimes you must
To remember that all are equal, and all turn to dust
We all once had diapers or something thereof
We were all once wiped and taken careof.
So be nice and stand proud,
Don’t be intimidated by those who are loud,
And remember that those who act like a grump
Still are human and make silly noises from their rump.

FAREWELL, 44 (video).
"...but knowing that here on earth, God's work must truly be our own."
I shot and edited this short on my phone a year or so ago, with the musical assistance of Jeremy Long and the voices of MLK, JFK, Winston Churchill, and others. Most of the time, when I rewatch something I've done, I'm very critical and self-aware of the many things I would do different and improve on. But this...I gotta say, I'm still proud of this little iPhone 5 film we put together about the personal and the universal . This may indicate a specific point in time...but I am reminded, again and again, of the importance, especially at critical points in our lives, of standing up. Of standing up.
To fight for the rights of all who wish to be free, to be free. And to never surrender.
Farewell, 44.
Our older children's childhoods have been spent as citizens of a country led by President Obama, an era that is now ending. Much has happened. I believe in a thankful spirit and fostering a spirit of gratitude. Mr. Obama, thank you for eight years of service. Just like family, you don't always have to agree in totality to respect, to love, and to acknowledge the commitments and spirit of service a person devotes their life to. Oh, the vid's three minutes. If anyone wants a director's cut three hour version, let me know. I stole the title from Jeremy Long's track. He did the music. Stud. Farewell, 44. You did a lot of good.

VIDEO : America the Greaterer - A Film about Relationships, Time Travel, and the State of the World
Two years ago, in anticipation of certain unfolding events, I wrote and filmed an audience-less speech. It is called "Make American Greaterer." It is sort of like a combination of TED talk and State of the Union address.
The time feels right. If this post gets at least three likes, then I will share the speech tonight, publicly, for the first time.
Also, if it gets only one like, but that one like is Stephen Lundquist, then I will post. Let's make this viral, folks.
I'm not saying it's the greatest speech ever, but it just might be the best one you hear all week, possibly.

LITTLE TRAVELS: Everything is not Awesomeous (But Stevenson, WA is) Video
Everything is not awesomeous. In which I provide a brief list of things that are not awesome, or anti-awesome, or simply not very high awesomeness, and then conclude with something that is simply sort of awesome, and free. Hint and spoiler: Skamania County Fair.

VERY LITTLE TRAVELS: Insurcountable (Neskowin, Depot Bay, Oregon Coast) video
iPhone-shot musings on Olympic parenting, set against the miserableness of the Oregon Coast. There's probably still events in Rio happening, or Zac Efron videos on SnapChat, so that might be a better bet, but if those don't appeal to you, then totes take a look. It's fifty-seven seconds.

SAM A. MARITAN (STOP MOTION).
One of the children was not feeling wonderful as the rain beat down, so my wife suggested we stay in and make a stop motion short. So we did.
Then we went hiking.
Perhaps you will enjoy. It is one minute, so if you find it worthless, then at least it's a fairly small percentage of your life wasted.

THE DAY (MOBY), PLUS 'BETTER THAN JULIE.'
BETTER THAN JULIE?
Daddy, daddy!
they shrilled.
Push us on the tire swing, push us FAST on the tire swing!!
Why?
I said.
Why should I push you? We're at a park. You're supposed to be playing, not swinging.
Because it's fun!
the shrilling continued.
And because you're good at pushing!
One of the two - I recognized her; I think she may have been my daughter - paused mid-shriek.
Yeah, you're a pretty good pusher,
she said.
Probably like the fourth best in the world.
Oh.
I said.
Why not Top Three?
Well,
she said.
Julie Natiuk is the third best. One time she pushed us and she was very good at it. Better than you.
Okay.
I said.
Fair enough. Who's got the top two spots then?
She shrugged.
I don't know. But I'm sure there's a couple people somewhere in the world I haven't met who are better at pushing than you.
Alright.
I said.
I guess I could push you for a little bit. After all, you guys are on my Top 100 best children in the world list.
What?!
she shrieked.
Top hundred?!
Yep.
I said.
Probably 93 and 94. Something like that.
Well who's higher than?
she asked.
I don't know.
I said.
I haven't met all the children in the world, but there's probably some I'd like more.
DADDY!!
she yelled.
and I started pushing. Higher and faster than they'd ever gone before. Because I'm the best...or at least best-ish. I'll take a Top 5 finish. Props, Julie. Way to set the bar fairly high.

Daddy?
he asked.
Are we poor, or are we wealthy?
We...
I said, pausing to give this question my full attention.
...are wealthy.
Oh.
he said.
We are?
Well,
I said.
Our lives are filled with rich experiences and rich conversations, so yes, we are rich with memories and love.
Oh.
he said.
Did you say we're rich with conversations?
Yes,
I said,
already preparing to move onto other things after giving our son an incredibly thought-provoking and holiday-appropriate response.
I did say something like that.
Well,
he said.
When a conversation is over, then you don't really have anything...it's just sort of done. I thought that if you were rich it means you have a lot of money.
Yeah.
I said.
There's that too.

GUEST POST: JONNY & JOSEPH IN UTAH.
Quick little 48 hour trip to St. George/Hurricane, Utah to grab aerials and ground footage in and around Colorado City, home of the infamous Roland and Warren Jeffs, among others. If you've ever read Jon Krakaur's "Under the Banner of Heaven", you'll know some of the controversies that have ensued here. Tune in tomorrow night to #ABC20/20 to check out the story and see some of our work.

4 YEARS OLD, 4 A.M. ETERNAL PLUS L'ORANGE, PLUS FIVE NEW YEAR'S LESSONS.
Daddy?
he asked in the darkness as we pulled into our driveway.
When we get inside can I have an orange and then can I go to bed?
Well,
I said.
It's four o'clock in the morning, so I suppose it would be okay for you to go to bed. Are you kinda tired?
Yeah.
he said.
I want to go to bed after I have an orange.
Alright.
I said.
But I need to brush my teeth after I eat an orange.
he said.
You are your mother's son.
I said.
And that's a good thing.
Happy 2015, universe. Don't forget to stay up late lots, floss and brush daily, and eat lots of fruit.
____
FIVE NEW YEAR'S LESSONS CONTAINED IN THIS THREE MINUTES OF A FOUR-YEAR OLD TRYING TO CLIMB A MOUNTAIN AND DRUM SOLO THE KILLERS.
1. There's a time to be in the spotlight, and time to cheer on others in the spotlight.
2. Interests need nurturing. And enthusiastic support.
3. Juxtaposition: melody, noise, chaos, and structure are interblended ingredients of successful art, music, and life.
4. Life is a mixture of the sacred and the secular, like it or not. Brace against it or embrace it.
5a. Take turns.
5b. Keep going.
And maybe you'll succeed. Or maybe you won't. But either way, listen to lots of good music along the way.
5d. We sing Jesus Loves Me together, and we sing All These Things (a.k.a. I've Got Soul, But I'm Not a Soldier) together. And we sing a lot of songs together. Singing is participatory, and should be done frequently and with vigor, and possibly in tune if possible, but don't let it stop you if that's a stumbling block.
5e. Do not make excuses for not making art or music, like not having lessons, or missing part of a cymbal. Use what you got. And make melody for the universe.
Happy New Year, worlds.
